Background of Program
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nayhan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces has set out a bold and inspiring vision to encourage today’s UAE youth to take a stronger leadership role in the development of the nation and to seize the opportunity to help shape the country’s future. HH Sheikh Mohammed has been instrumental in promoting the School Citizenship Program as a means to inspire young male and female Emiratis to contribute to the ongoing success of the UAE.
The Abu Dhabi Education Council, GHQ, and the Police have worked in partnership with Al Shaheen, a provider with many years of experience of working in schools with cadet and leadership programs, to plan and implement a school citizenship program in 57 high schools in Abu Dhabi and some of the northern emirates. This program will replace and broaden the existing Military Program that has operated in high schools for the last fifteen years.
The School Citizenship Program intends to deliver a world class program in schools that develops the qualities of leadership, teamwork, discipline, perseverance, loyalty and tolerance and helps students to become responsible and productive citizens
After completing the program students will:
- Demonstrate the qualities and skills required to be a leader
- Know and value teamwork
- Be able to solve problems and make rational decisions
- Be better communicators
- Demonstrate greater social responsibility – adding value to their community
- Be more disciplined, balanced and global citizens
- Demonstrate practical skills, techniques and values that are appropriate for a career in the Military and Police
- Be better equipped to achieve success in their life
- Have a sense of pride of the heritage, culture and traditions of the UAE
- Have enhanced their loyalty and respect for their leaders, family and country
Loyalty, discipline and respect are key values that have helped the UAE to forge a society that places safety, security and the sanctity of community as its topmost priorities. The Student Citizenship Program will become a great opportunity for our youth to nurture self respect and to help them understand the value of their contribution to the continued success of our country. Now, more than ever, our youth need to understand the importance of being an Emirati and demonstrating to the world what that really means.
Boys and girls from grades 10 through 12 will take part in the program which will broaden the existing Military program by including both Police core skills as well as a strong life skills component. The program will encourage students to be active citizens through local and national projects.
The School Citizenship Program will involve over 13,400 students. Students will be taught how to live their lives with discipline, respect and loyalty whilst being responsible to their country and local environment. Self-empowerment, belief, leadership and other core skills will be actively developed. Students will also be introduced to the Military and Police services to gain a better understanding of their role and their importance to the UAE community as a whole. One of the program’s ultimate goals is to improve the quality of students on entry into these services.
